PCYD's Endorsement Process
This year, we decided to try something a little different with our endorsement process. Instead of endorsing during the primaries, we voted to create a Voter's Guide that would publish our endorsement questionnaires. By bringing these questions and answers forward to the public, we hope that we have helped them become educated on their local elections.
Here is how the process worked:
Pierce County Young Democrat's Questions
All members were invited to submit questions to be voted upon at our May general meeting. Here are the selected questions:
Do you support Sanctuary Status for the area you would represent? Please explain your response to the Sanctuary Status question.
What resolutions from PCYDs or the WA Democrat State Party do you align with? (PCYD: Decline to Sign I-1552, Petition: Tacoma City Council: Protect Undocumented Immigrants #HereToStay)
If you could achieve three accomplishments in your coming term, what would they be? (500 words/3600 characters max)
What are the top five needs of your constituency? (500 words/3600 characters max)
How do you plan to involve the voices and needs of young people?
Do you have any plans for improving police-minority relations? Please explain your response.
Do you have any staff from PCYDs currently working or volunteering for you? If so, what are their names?
What consultants for this current campaign have you worked/collaborated with?
How will you advocate for the homeless population? Including in regards to city camp sweeps and voting rights?
Would you advocate for Net Neutrality on a Federal Level? Please explain your response to the Net Neutrality question.
How would you protect people in your area from having their info sold through ISP?
Do you support Sanctuary Status for the area you would represent? Please explain.
Once we combined those questions with some basic info questions (incumbency, contact info, etc.), we created a Google form and e-mailed it to all candidates. Here is the email that was sent to the candidates.
This questionnaire is a collection of questions collected both online and in-meeting from Young Democrats of Pierce County. They were approved by a vote of the body on May 17th 2017. Most responses require 50-300 words (max 2250 characters).
This year for Pierce County Young Democrats, we’re endorsing during the primary process. We will be releasing a Voter’s Guide earlier on, and this questionnaire will serve as information for both processes. If you’re interested in our endorsement, please respond to this letter by June 5th.
We invite you to our June meeting: ‘Meet the Candidates’. At this meeting we’d like you or a representative from your campaign to give a short speech and mingle with Young Democrats. We’re presenting this as an opportunity for young people to get involved with campaign work, so it’s a great opportunity to meet potential organizers for your race.
Response Due: June 5th by email to email@example.com
‘Meet the Candidates' Event: Tuesday, June 13 at 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Tacoma Public Library Branch Libraries
215 S 56th St, Tacoma, Washington 98408
or on Google Calendar:
(Note this time and date has been updated!)
Voter’s Guide Published on FB Page, Dems County Website, and Email: July 8th
Endorsement: August 16th, Endorsement Meeting
Please answer within guidelines.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
We also sent out reminder e-mails to the candidates that had not responded. From there our work began. We encountered some unforseen difficulties towards our deadline, which is why the publishing is happening a few days late. While the entire website is not up and running quite yet, we did prioritize all races that will be voted on in the primary. The general election races will be posted within the week.
If you'd like to compare answers with the ones submitted in the questionnaire, visit this google spreadsheet that compiles all of the answers directly from the google form. The layout is a little messy due to the transfer between form to excel, and we can't change it easily without losing that link.
